NBA Playoffs First Round: What to Expect
This year’s NBA Playoffs first-round matchups are some of the most exciting in recent years, with a huge chance of multiple first-round upsets. While most of these series are in the Western Conference, lets first take a quick look at how the East has shaped out:
Knicks vs. Cavs: The standout series in the East
The three top seeds in the East — the Bucks, Celtics, and Sixers — are expected to make it through to the conference semifinals with ease. However, the basketball gods have more than made up for it by pitting the high-flying New York Knicks against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Knicks and the Cavs both had strong regular seasons. Signing hometown guard Jalen Brunson during last year’s free agency turned out to be a stroke of genius; Brunson averaged 24/3.5/6.2 while shooting 49.1% from the field and 41.6% from three-point range. Forwards Julius Randle, RJ Barett, and sixth man of the year favorite, Immanuel Quickley, helped the Knicks earn a (47-35) record, with many memorable wins along the way.
However, the Cavs, led by guard Donovan Mitchell, could be their undoing in the Playoffs. The four-time All-Star was lights out for his new team, averaging 28.3/4.3/4.4 during the regular season. To add fuel to the fire, the Knicks reportedly were very interested in trading for Mitchell in the 2022 off-season.
However, Donovan ended up on the Cavs, teaming up with DPOY candidate Evan Mobley, point guard Darius Garland, and shot-blocking specialist Jarrett Allen. The Cavs finished the regular season with their first 50-win season since the era of King James.
The Wild Wild Western Conference
Any avid NBA fan will agree that this is the most open the Western Conference has been in a long time. Even though the Denver Nuggets, led by back-to-back league MVP Nikola Jokic, finished as the top seed with a 53-29 record, it is hard to call them the clear favorites to make the NBA Finals.
The LA Lakers and the Phoenix Suns both have a completely new look to them. The Suns added superstar forward Kevin Durant to a side that already contains Devin Booker, Chris Paul, and Deandre Ayton. In fact, the Suns have only lost once with KD in their starting line-up.
The Suns take on the LA Clippers led by two-time NBA Champion Kawhi Leonard. Unfortunately, the Klaw will be without his running mate Paul George for at least the first game of the series. While the Clippers will definitely miss George’s contributions on both ends of the floor, they could still make the series a tough contest for the Suns.
The Lakers turned their season around at the February trade deadline. The team, led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, added the likes of D’Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Mo Bamba. Since then, the Lakers have been the best defensive team in the league. They will have the opportunity to cause an upset against Ja Morant and the second-seed Memphis Grizzlies.
For many, the biggest first-round match-up in the West features an all-California clash between the Sacramento Kings and the reigning champion Golden State Warriors. The Kings were the surprise story of the year, led by guard De’Aaron Fox, power forward Domantas Sabonis, and new head coach Mike Brown and his brand of team basketball.
However, bet against the likes of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green at your own peril. The team also brought back Gary Payton II in February, and forward Andrew Wiggins is also set to return in time for the first-round series.
Who Is Favored to Win the 2022-2023 Season NBA Playoffs
Currently, the Milwaukee Bucks (2020-2021 winners) lead the pack as a favorite, but they are closely followed by the Boston Celtics, who contended with last year’s winners, the Gold State Warriors. Some of the other frontrunners for the 2023 NBA Playoffs are:
- Phoenix Suns
- Detroit Pistons
- Philadelphia 76ers
- LA Lakers
- Orlando Magic
- Memphis Grizzlies
